Chapter 10

I pulled another box from the wall, grunting with the weight of it, and sat back down with that one. My eyes scanned the contents, and though I was fairly certain I knew the answer, I gestured to the box as I asked Kadoc, “What’s this?”

“Paint.” He sat down across the room from me, surprising me. The space was small enough that if I’d made any effort, I could’ve pressed the bottom of my foot to his, but I didn’t make the effort of course. He still wasn’t himself, though my exploration seemed to be calming him down.

“My sisters and I used to paint rocks and trees with mud,” I admitted to him, lifting a jar that held a thick, bright blue liquid. It was incredible that they had these treasures just sitting in an underground prison cave, when I had lived who knew how many years without so much as seeing them.

“What did you paint?” he asked.

My lips curved upward. “Blobs, I suppose. I never enjoyed it. Prina and Kinin could spend days and days creating masterpieces with rock and mud that would dry and then look even prettier until the next rain came, but I never had the patience or inspiration for it.”

I unscrewed the lid that seemed to have been twisted onto the jar, to protect the paint I supposed. Dipping a finger in the bright blue, I lifted the digit from the thick liquid and watched in awe as it dripped back into the pool of color.

“Do you paint?” I asked Kadoc, as I watched the color drip from my finger.

“No. I never had the time to try.” His words were still gruff, but his anger seemed to have dried up.

“Not even as a child?”

“My childhood was cut short.” He said the words without any anger or regret, but I still felt for him.

I could remember being a child in the Hollows; I was the youngest of my sisters, and all nine of them had taught me and taken care of me, teaching me to brush my hair and clean my teeth and watch how the stars changed. The memories were chest-achingly sweet, and I was grateful for them.

“Come on, then.” I gestured him over, tugging a sheet of paper from beneath a few more jars of paint. After spreading the paper on the floor, I unscrewed the lids on a few more of the paints before setting them around the paper.

Kadoc hadn’t moved, but I was fairly certain he’d come over eventually.

I set out a few more sheets of paper, since there were many in the bottom of the glass box, and set them around the paints. There were some brushes tucked up against the side of the box, so I grabbed them out and dropped them into the open jars of paint.

Kadoc still didn’t budge, so I slid over a bit, stopping in front of one of the papers.

“Don’t make me fail at painting all alone,” I complained to the dragon, pulling the brush from the jar of pink paint.
